This past Saturday, July 26, neighbors gathered on Humboldt Boulevard just north of Armitage Avenue to mulch trees and learn about caring for trees on public land. The day kicked off a campaign to raise interest and funding for a tree planting event in the same area this October.
Openlands offers a “tree-planters grant”, which matches funds raised by local communities for the planting and care of new trees on public lands. Logan Square Preservation has applied for the grant and launched a fundraising project with the goal of raising $10,000. In addition to the online fundraiser, Logan Square Preservation is hosting a fundraising party at Longman & Eagle this coming Tuesday, Aug 5. Tickets can be purchased here.
Matched with the grant from Openlands, the money raised could total up to $25,000 for the planting of new trees and their subsequent care.
On a weekend in October, neighbors will gather again to plant the new trees in the same area that was cared for this past weekend. Stay tuned to LoganSquare.TV for announcements of tree-planting dates for this fall.
