Some of the most exciting and most special releases of the year for the music industry will happen this weekend, and they can’t be downloaded. This Saturday, April 19 is Record Store Day across the country. In Logan Square, several retailers including Saki, Bucket O’ Blood, Bric-a-Brac Records and Logan Hardware will be participating.
The annual event began several years ago as many big box stores were losing a lot of business to music downloads. It was a way for independent retailers to remind shoppers that neighborhood music stores still exist and have always been able to provide a type of service that larger stores never could. The growth of the event has coincided with a resurgence in the popularity of vinyl as a medium. It has become a day for large labels to offer special limited releases.
